Musion Academy

The Musion Academy is a forum to explore visual strategies in 3D illusions – creatively and technically. In the last 2 years 350 students joined the Musion Academy. In collaboration with London’s world famous Central Saint Martins College for Art and Design, the Musion Academy has now been institutionalised academically.

In the past year, the Musion Academy has presented original art work at the UK’s biggest Fair for Art and Technology Kinetica as well as at the legendary Shunt Performance Space and the world famous animation festival onedotzero and at Yota Space in St Petersburg (w. UVA, Brian Eno, Chris Levine and others). Musion Academy also organised the first global VJ Award the Randstad Gold VJ Award premiered at this year’s MAMAs Awards in December 2010 in London.

At Kinetica 2011, the Musion Academy will showcase selected Musion Academy artists and MAMAs nominees along with the winner of the MAMAs 2010 Grand Award - New Opera Hero. Musion Academy presents the winners of the MAMAs Performance Award Madi Boyd and Kira Zhigalina, as well as Rachel Garrard, Ryan Styles and Madaleine Trigg with live performances at Kinetica.

Perform Live with ABBA Hologram on stage at ABBAWorld

In what promises to be one of the most exciting and spectacular features of the upcoming ABBAWORLD exhibition, the audience will be able to sing and dance together with the Swedish supergroup ABBA on stage. With the high definition holographic video system Eyeliner, ABBA returns to the stage through a holographic illusion of the group for the visitor to interact with. Senior director of production Mats Daleskog of Touring Exhibitions, the company behind ABBAWORLD, says, ‘‘We were very impressed with the Eyeliner system when it was presented to us by Musion Systems, and we immediately knew that this was something we had to incorporate into ABBAWORLD. It’s an amazing, seemingly magical technology, and Musion Systems have really excelled themselves when it comes to this one.’’

Together with content provider Square Zero, Musion Systems has made it possible for the visitor to come closer to ABBA than ever before. The global launch event for Samsung's Corby, which was held in Milan, strategically demonstrated with d'strict's interdisciplinary R&D outputs in an physical space.

The success of the Corby project does not limit itself to the combination of creativity and technology. The Corby global event has been recognized as an innovative experimental marketing practice which interconnected a physical space (Touch I platform in the orange room) with an online & mobile (email and mobile application) convergence, and was made possible via a strategic scenario.

Musion & d'strict first decided on a launch show in the form of a fashion show catwalk in view of the Milan Fashion Week, reflecting the lifestyle of Corby target users, who are young, creative, fashionable, and speedy. It then added diverse interaction techniques and a mix of analogue and digital presentation within a campaign focused on the younger generation's fashion and style icons. By doing so, the Corby launch show was able to innovatively redefine conventional business presentation, which would otherwise have been relatively dull and ordinary.

18M long, Real-time Gesture Sensing Hologram Runway

d'strict opted for a 4D art-hologram runway for the Corby launch show. It was aimed at maximizing the effect of the performance by combining digital technology with analogue performance art. The performance was also significant in that it commercialized media art, previously known only to a select few, for diffusion to the general public. Both sides of the 18m-long catwalk for the fashion show were surrounded with holograms, producing diverse effects through active interaction with the models on the stage. The performance was organized so that 550 audiences on both sides of the stage would be able to see it.

d'strict used its gesture-sensing hologram, SEE H, to make the holographic images react to the models walking aloing the 18m-long stage. Rather than simply "showing" enormous holograms, it demonstrated how holograms can interact in real-time with the models. Each hologram was created as a 3D image to make it seem as if the models were touching real objects.

Corby's Product Presentation with Voice Sensing Technology

At the product presentation which followed the character performance, SEE H was again used to convey accurate information on Corby's diverse functions. A holographic image reacting in real-time to the presenter's motions, combined with a voice-sensing function, created holographic letters which appeared to float around the presenter's mouth, forming themslves into the words he was saying. The sensitive sensing technology also changed the size of the letters according to the volume of the presenter's voice. By using a sound-sensing technique to generate a reaction from the audience and interacting with them, the launch show changed the once-unilateral form of presentation to a communicative format by using sounds and holograms.

Pixie Lott Hologram Performances

If the thought of ogling Pixie Lott or getting up close and personal with Tinchy Stryder without the intervention of bodyguards excites you, hologram gigging could be the future.

Orange and 4Music have recorded exclusive performances from Lott, Stryder and N-Dubz and loaded them up to a special holographic stage to take them on tour across the country.

These first ever multi-artist hologram gigs kicked off at Lakeside Shopping Centre in Essex at the weekend and hits other cities up and down the land over the next month. The shows run every 20 minutes and no ticket is required.

The technology works by projecting high-definition video images integrated with computer-generated effects to create a 'google-free 3D' effect. The theory is a 140 year old stage trick performed in 1862 by Professor John Henry Pepper, who created an illusion by using a large pane of glass. Set at a 45-degree angle, it reflected brightly lit objects out of view of the audience and superimposed them on stage.

Three-dimensional imaging: New technologies that display 3-D visuals are on the verge of spreading from cinemas into the wider world.

BRIGHT and crisp high-definition (HD) images, a luxury not so long ago, are fast becoming standard in consumer electronics. HD technology is now well entrenched in the marketplace in the form of televisions, video cameras, Blu-ray players, games consoles and projectors. There seems little scope to improve the display of two-dimensional images, which provide about as much detail as the human eye can appreciate. So attention is shifting to the next frontier in display technology: three-dimensional (3-D) images.

In recent years 3-D cinema projection has made a dramatic comeback, shaking off its image as a gimmick and replacing the cheesy old red-and-blue glasses with new technologies that are easier to use and produce more lifelike results. Studios love 3-D because it is immune to piracy. Cinemas love 3-D because it allows them to offer something that even the most elaborate home cinema cannot match, and charge more for it. Now 3-D seems to be on the verge of moving out of the cinema and into a wider range of products.

Would you look at thatBetter and cheaper 3-D display technologies for home and office use are “ready for prime time”, says a senior executive at Wistron, a Taiwanese firm that manufactures computers for many leading brands. By the end of this year the first mass-market laptops capable of displaying 3-D images will be on sale, he says, and by the end of 2010 all of the world’s top ten computer-makers will include 3-D displays in their product line-ups. At the Consumer Electronics Show held in Las Vegas in January, prototype 3-D televisions and other products were unveiled by JVC, LG, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony and others.

Musion Eyeliner Holographic Projection technology updates a 120-year-old magicians' illusion called Pepper's Ghost which wowed Victorian audiences. It showed ghostly apparitions on stage which were made from the clever use of mirrors and light to project an image seemingly into thin air.

This concept has been updated by 21st Century high definition (HD) projectors and cameras, allowing company bosses and entertainers to deliver live 3D-looking speeches.

Ian O'Connell from Musion Systems said the technology developed thanks to HD video was becoming more popular and accessible.

"The brightness of HD projectors today gives you something that's far removed from the original ghostly effects. It creates something more akin to a virtual image, some people perceive it as a hologram, but in actual fact it is more accurately known as a virtual image," he said.

On Wednesday 12th November 2008, Musion’s very own Telepresence system orchestrated a show stopping Star Wars style holographic communication in real time between London and Berlin for the BlachReportDialog, a German live communications conference.

Ian O’Connell, Director of Musion Systems appeared as a life-size holographic projection transmitted from a studio in London to a live audience in Berlin. The reaction from the audience was over whelming, after the presentation leaders of the German communication industry swarmed the stage to get a closer look at the technology. RTL, Germany’s leading commercial television station, got so excited at the afternoon rehearsal, they sent a journalist and crew to London and filmed their own show simultaneously in London and Berlin.

This exciting demonstration was created with the help of Masergy, who provided a communications network with exceptional video transport enabling high definition images and sound. Masergy also provided the London studio for the 3D transmission.

“This demonstration represents what is possible when you combine incredible video technology with an advanced video network,” said John Dumbleton, SVP and Managing Director of Masergy.
The possibilities of our new Holographic Telepresence system are endless, as best described by Ian O’Connell himself: “Most telecommunications companies see it mostly for use in the boardroom but we think it can be far more inclusive than that. Because it’s bi-directional both sides interact in real time, so it could work in education where a teacher can be transmitted to a class of two or three hundred but by using touch screen technology, she could home in on any PC for one to one with a particular student. Churches can transmit charismatic preachers, prisoners can have visits with their families in their own living rooms, engineers and inventors can collaborate, entertainers can appear in nightclubs to launch a new album in 1,000 music stores simultaneously or your front room and the possibilities for politicians are obvious. What the implications are for dating I dread to think. If you think the internet transformed everything, if you think You Tube and MySpace are great, where will this go?”

CNN Hologram - Telstra Live Holographic Projection by Musion Eyeliner

In relation to the recent CNN Hologram news, Telstra in May 2008 beamed a live hologram of a senior staff member between Melbourne and Adelaide in what has been billed as an Australian first. Telstra chief technology officer Dr Hugh Bradlow, based in Melbourne, appeared at a business function in Adelaide as a real-time hologram and interacted with members of the audience for around 15 minutes, the company said. "We've all seen this sort of thing in futuristic sci-fi movies, but the reality is that it can be done here and now, as we have just demonstrated," said David Thodey of Telstra's enterprise and government department. The event was carried out by Musion Systems Limited, in conjunction with their regional partners.

Samuel Ryder Hologram amazes at Ryder Cup Gala Event 2008

Samuel Ryder died in 1936, but at the 2008 Ryder Cup Gala Event he was full size, front and center, and looking better than ever. Samuel had some tricks up his sleeve this time around. He hit golf balls into the crowd and disappeared and reappeared, transporting himself from one side of the stage to the other in a magical glow. He even appeared in a fully holographic chair at one point. The results were spectacular, and the live audience was in awe.

As one audience member said, "I had no idea he wasn't real. I don't have a clue how it was done, but it was amazing." Samuel was brought back to life by Musions partner Digital Illusions, a company who specializes in holographic projection and is a reseller of the Musion Eyeliner system in the United States. Ann DeVilbiss, the company creative director and owner, developed the content along with Ed Conrad of NMR Staging and Events and the PGA of America. The team shot the footage in Los Angeles and composited the pieces at the Digital Illusions design studio. Every step of the way the footage was tested in Digital Illusions' holographic demonstration studio, the first of its kind in the US, so that the team could ensure that everything would look perfect when the content was delivered to the client and projected live on stage for the first time.

Live hologram of Telstra CEO hosts conference

Telstra beamed a live hologram of a senior staff member between Melbourne and Adelaide in what has been billed as an Australian first. Telstra chief technology officer Dr Hugh Bradlow, based in Melbourne, appeared at a business function in Adelaide as a real-time hologram and interacted with members of the audience for around 15 minutes, the company said.

"We've all seen this sort of thing in futuristic sci-fi movies, but the reality is that it can be done here and now, as we have just demonstrated," said David Thodey of Telstra's enterprise and government department.

These holograms are widely used in advertising, art and entertainment, creating life-like 3D images that, to the unknown eye, are as lifelike as real objects. Telstra said the real time hologram of Dr Bradlow was made possible by the company's high-speed networks and the Musion Eyeliner holographic projection system.

The Musion technology uses a single high definition camera to capture the image and a single HD projector to project it, onto a special foil. According to Musion, "All the images used on a Musion Eyeliner system appear as three-dimensional images, but are projected as two-dimensional images into a 3D stage set. It is the mind of the audience that creates the 3D illusion. This means that production costs are minimal, needing only the single camera lens single camera lens for filming and a single projector for the playback."

The Eyeliner foil is the heart of the system, according to Musion which says its business is based around exploiting a number of patents that have been issued on producing Pepper's Ghost using the purpose designed foil rather than glass.The Eyeliner foil is "carefully prepared during manufacture and rolling so as to retain maximum transparency and strength when subject to extreme tension. The resulting smooth, blemish free surface betters that of a huge plate glass mirror, allowing the true reproduction of high definition video at such high quality that audiences viewing Eyeliner video images imagine them to be real."

Telstra is not the first company to use the technology. David Beckham recorded a message in LA, appearing as a hologram in London. Richard Branson has also given virtual speeches, as did Al Gore during his Live Earth concerts last year. But the most exciting thing is that Musion have already tried out a live hologram - in other words, they have the technology to make people appear as a hologram in real time from anywhere in the world.

At its annual UK Sales Conference, BT Global Services treated its sales team to an ‘out-of-this-world’ presentation. It wasn’t held on a space ship, but inside a ‘virtual’ computer game.

Held at the NEC in Birmingham, 1,800 BT Sales executives gathered to celebrate their achievements, and to be inspired about their role in building the future success of BTGS. Marketing Agency, George P Johnson (GPJ), created the concept and developed the theme of ‘Game-On’ for the event. The auditorium needed a big stage and the content had to be seen from all areas of the room. To achieve this, an 18m-wide Musion® Eyeliner™ Foil was used.
Some presenters were beamed in and out of the stage and others just walked on to the stage and interacted with larger-than-life graphics that floated around them. The content presented was a mixture of live filming, recorded footage and 3D graphics.

The headline feature at the new Toyota Auris Bluewater concept store was the Musion® high definition projection system which showcased a spectacular giant free form 3D Auris movie. The content was created especially for the Bluewater store and was shown in its own large screen theatre. Musion® worked closely with screen production specialists Square Zero to create a moving embodiment of the line "created around you".

The film, a mixture of live action and CGI, featured an organic shape formed by liquid mercury growing around various elements of the new car.This neatly transformed into a mercury wireframe tracing a line around a seated driver. Panels assemble to form a full size Auris in front of the audience. From there the audience was taken a journey through the interior and end on a specific feature of the optitron dials.

Musion® Eyeliner™ System incorporates some very simple video principles and all equipment used is readily available to hire and purchase.

The primary components of an Eyeliner™ set up are:
A video projector, preferably DLP with an HD card/minimum native resolution of 1400 x 1050 and brightness of 7000+ lumens. Shop windows, trade stands or other kinds of installations in areas of high ambient light require LED wall of 6mm or 4mm pitch as the video source.

For smaller cabinet installations, a high quality TFT Plasma or LCD screen can also be used. A hard-disc player with 1920 x 1080i HD graphics card, Apple or PC video server, DVD player. Musion® Eyeliner™ Foil and a stage set, lighting and audio as required.Show controller (on site or remote).

Subjects are filmed in HDTV and broadcast on to the foil through HDTV projection systems, driven by HD Mpeg2 digital hard disc players, or uncompressed full HD cam decks or HD Digital Video Servers.

The setup can be erected within a self-contained four-legged ground support or a bespoke cabinet. Alternatively, the foil can be stretched into a truss framework and flown from its own hanging points.

In either configuration, Eyeliner™ allows for a full working stage or set to be constructed behind the foil. As such, live actors or performers are able to interact with other projected images in such a way that it appears to the audience that all of the objects they are seeing are on stage.

It is therefore entirely possible to have a live performer sing a duet with a ‘virtual’ partner, a cartoon character or even their projected double.

All the images used on an Eyeliner™ system appear as three-dimensional images, but are projected as two-dimensional images (2D/3D) into a 3D stage set. The mind of the audience created the 3D illusion. This means that production costs are minimal, needing only the single camera lens for filming and a single projector for the playback.
